    HD Size and XP sp2

Hi,I have a 250 gb SATA Maxtor HD. I know that for its full size to be displayed you need to download SP2 which I have done. Is there something further I need to do as it still only displays 127 gb (was 137 when first on). Thanks guys.

I had this program with my western digital 250GB drive. Head over to the Maxtor website, they should have a little program you download to fix this problem.

    yes, there is.

    run regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters

make a new DWORD value called EnableBigLBA, set it to 1.

    then reboot

you'll be able to partiton the remaining space from the disk manager (right click on my computer, manage, disk management)

still only shows as 127gb in computer management?

perhaps a bios update of some sort for your disk controller, to support 48 bit lba?

or if it's an option in the controller's bios, ensure it's enabled?

I may be forgetting something, but if Windows could only 'see' 127gb at installation, it would only have been able to partition that space. Can Windows do dynamic partition resizing? If not, wouldn't you have to format the whole thing and start again?

Yes in theory Windows can alter the size even after it's been set, but that doesn't always work in practise.

ATA133 controllers don't suffer from this nor do they rely on Windows to support large hard drives, unfortunately ATA100 do.

Anyway, the best way I have always believed is to slipstream SP2 into the XP CD so it's available at the time of format and installation.

It's very simple to do, handy and is foolproof.
