Help with computer that restart itself when playing 3d games.

Hello!!

A friend from a game online told me to try and get some help on this forum with my problem.

A week ago i had a power failure so my computer turned itself down.
And when i started it again.My old hdd was broken.
So i put another hdd in it and when i try and run 3d games on it it shuts the power of after like 2 minutes sometimes 10 minutes and restarts itself.It always do that now when i try and do something more advanced than beeing on the internet.
It have never done this before.it just started one week ago.
I have tried to change all drivers to the latest ones.And also Tried to upgrade the bios.And reset the bios.I have never overclocked my system.
I bought a new 80 gb hdd but that didnt fix this problem.
I put new cooling paste on the Cpu but that didnt help.
Bought a new Cooling system for the cpu but that didnt help.
All the fans are working as they should.
The only thing that is out of the order is the temp on my Cpu that is 55 degrees when i dont do anything on it.And it gets way over 60 almost 70 if i do something else than surfing the webb.
And before the power failure my cpu was steady at 42-47 degrees at heavy load.I have 5 extra fans in the tower.
Is there any way to test the cpu or the mainboard to find out what part that has the fault?
Or if anyone have some other ideas what to try that is welcome.
I got the same problem on my other computer after a Power failure.
That one is doing the same thing as this one.And that is a Dual amd MP system.

My spec on this comp is this.


Msi MS K7T266 Pro2 Raid mainboard.
Chieftech dragon medium tower with a 340w powersource or 360w dont remember right now.
Amd Xp 1800+ Cpu.
512 mb ddr 266 ram.Its kingston ddr ram.
80 Gb hdd.
Geforce fx 5200 256 mb display adapter.
A LG dvd +/- rw dvd writer
And a floppy disc.
5 chassi fans 2 in the front.2 in the back and 1 from the side.

Have taken out everything like the extra dvd burner.The extra soundcard.Just having the most important things left in it.

Sounds like the behaviour I was experiencing in the thread below.... occasionally random but definitely every time I tried something that stressed the PC.

Perhaps the power failure caused a problem with your PSU?

I've fixed part of my problem in the other thread quite by accident, but have still had the very ocasional restart when playing the likes of rome total war or hidden and dangerous.

I've got a new PSU on the way now that can provide at least 250W under full load.

Well since this aint the same PSU that i used when the power failure was i dont think there is any wrong on this one.
This one is just a couple of days old.
So im out of ideas of what it can be that is messing.But i think its either the mainboard or the Cpu.Since the Cpu get really hot.So i think thats where the problem is.

This is probably a RAM problem. Run memtest and see if you get any errors.

If your hitting 70c surfing the web, which will use 10-20% cpu then a 3d game that runs the CPU at 100% for prolonged periods is going to be hitting the thermal shutdown level and rebooting. My NF7-S has a thermal shutdown protection of 75C so I would imagine that it could well be that. If you were running at 42c before you re-applied the thermal paste then i'd suspect either the paste you used isn't too good, or the heatsink isn't seated correctly..What paste did you use and what cooler is sitting on top of the CPU?

Thanks all for all the replys.
My cpu was running at 42-47c before the powerfailure.
After that it does get over 55 as soon as i start the computer.And when doin other things than surfing the webb it hits over 60-70c
And that was before i tried to use new cooling paste on it.I tried that just to lower the temp a bit but it didnt help.
I used Cooler Master® cooler paste High Performance.Dont know if its any good or not.
And the Cooler that is on top of the cpu is the one that follow the 2400+ amd xp cpu.

Have just finished memtest and no errors in that so it seems its not the ddr ram either.

Are you sure the fans working on the cooler? Seems to be too much of a difference for it to be down to paste, a few degress yes, 30c no..Your not running the processor at higher multi or anything are you?

Yes i am shure the fans are working.Have the case open right now and watching the fan work.
And no im not running the processor at higher Multi or anything.
That is the strange part.I cant find anything that is wrong in bios or any other settings.So i guess either the mainboard or the cpu is broken because of the power failure a week ago..

Maybe it is your PSU going wonkey and supplying too much juice to the cpu making it run hotter, have you compared the voltage value set in your bios to a monitoring util to see how much they differ?

You've started afresh with Windows or whatever OS you're using presumably? Above 65 degrees on that CPU is most likely going to be problematic. Take the side of the case off perhaps. Also try turning off auto restart and see what BSOD's XP is trying to throw at you, if any, you can then hope to ascertain if it's an over-temperature shutdown system kicking in.
