    SONY DRU720a problem

i just encounter a problem last night with my sony dru720a

i cant burn to the melody dvd+r. previous session work ok...then cant burn this time, 4-5 dvd wasted. using nero like others, the problem msg is "communication failure" which i never heard or met before.

between the previous session until now i did make a few system change...the most relevent being updating the nforce2 which include the ide controller. however this shouldnt be a problem, but i rollback it and try.still cant. delete it and use windows xp default.still cant. DMA on off also same cant

then there is 2 thing i think and do

    1. i m thinking maybe the ide cable is dead/faulty?highly doubt so but will change it to the new cable comes with the writer.

    2. i turn on the pc too long?the writer overheat? doubt so too because although pc on quite long and did alot thing like speeddisk(1-2 hours?) online,doom3 etc but did not use the writer at all until i first use it to copy a dvd to my hdd and then try burn it to new dvd+r

    3. i had update my detonator 71.84 that day but i thing it has nothing to do

any1 knows what "communication failure" means?

PS: i m using barton2500, epox mb, win xp sp1, and the secondary ide only has the writer as master. burning speed is 4x which is the speed of the dvd+r.

    THE LOG: (with DMA on)

You have DMA off on your DVD Rom, make sure it's enabled.

The following is from Nero in regard to your error message.

I got the 'Communication failure' message during the write process. Why?

This error message can be caused by the following:

Old IDE controller drivers - This is the most common cause of this error message. You must have the latest drivers for your IDE controller card to prevent it. (It´s the same for SCSI cards). Go to the website of the manufacturer of your controller card and obtain the latest drivers. Such as Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.

DMA settings - You may have DMA disabled for your CD-/DVD-ROM and recorder devices. You should enable this feature. If you have old drivers (even if you have the latest in some cases), DMA may not be properly supported, even though you can enable it. You should try with DMA disabled if you still have problems having enabled it.
    Enable or disable DMA:
To enable DMA in Windows 2000/XP, simply go to your 'Control Panel --> Systems --> Hardware --> Device Manager'. Double click on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Right click on the 'Primary IDE Channel', go to 'Properties --> Advanced Settings' and change ´Transfer Mode´ to 'DMA if available'. Do the same for the secondary IDE channel.

Driver conflicts - You may have (or had) other CD recording software installed on your system. Their drivers can cause conflicts with our software when trying to communicate to the recorder. Please remove any other recording program you may have on your system and be sure all their drivers are removed as well.

Poor IDE cables - In many cases, with the recorders supporting UDMA, you must use 80pin IDE cables. 40pin IDE cables work with the recorder, but when it comes to the actual recording process, there may be problems. You may just have an IDE cable that is in poor condition and need to replace it, too. Or try a different connector on that IDE cable as the connector could be the cause.

CSEL - If your devices are jumpered with CSEL, your controller could be having trouble with this setting. It's best to change it, so that you have your devices jumpered as master or slave. Refer to the manual on your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and recorder devices for how to do this.

err...i wonder where that dvdrom is from.ohya i think its the daemon tool or what so its not a 'hardware' but software. ive tried closing/disabling the software but still cant.

i m using the win xp sp1 driver for the ide controller so i guess its not a problem. if i use forceware,i cant seems to on the dma

i have no other cd-recording software.just nero frm the dvdrw

oh yeah i had jumper with CSEL,try change later. also will check the ide cable.

    thanks for your help!

If it's a virtual drive and you don't use it, then get rid of it. They are more problem than what they are worth. (unless off course you have a use for it)

There is a setting in Daemon (I don't have it anymore so can't check) that allows you to remove any virtual drives.

I personally wouldn't use CSEL, and prefer Master/Slave hierarchy, and they (CSEL) also need a special cable. You can't use a "normal" cable with cable select.

The correct cables I think have a notch cut out of one of the wires in the ribbon.

Anyway, there are a few things there you can tidy up. Good luck.
