abit kd7 help...

Hey guys,

Got this mobo in the computer downstairs, and have just got a new 80gb harddrive to replace the aging 4gb jobby... anyhow there seems to be some kind of fault with powering up the computer. I noticed it a few weeks ago - the on button would sometimes not turn the computer on after id been fiddling around... but it always did after a few goes. but now the computer doesnt boot up at all.

the psu is a no-name one which came with the computer, but i dont think that is the problem... basically the light on the motherboard lights up - suggesting that the board has power, but the 'on' switch does nothing... i thought maybe it was something shorting so took the whole computer apart and just rebuilt it and its just not turning on. ive tried shorting the pins on the motherboard quickly - incase it was the switch itself which is knackered, but that has done nothing...

i'm going out soonish, but if anyone could shed some light or give me some ideas about how to fix this bugger id be mighty happy

If I was you, I'd check the whole power switch, and try find the fault.
Also, shorting out the pins doesn't work first time round, give it a few goes.

While we're at it, you can power up an ATX power supply by shorting the green wire with any black ground wire. As you know, the ATX power supply will not turn on normally without a motherboard connected to it. There are times when you may want to test an ATX power supply or use the voltage from one but don't really want to hook up a motherboard. There's only one green wire and there are plenty of ground wires so it's easy to do. To use a bent paper clip and insert one end in the green wire connector and bend it around and put it into a black wire connector.

ok, tried my cheiftec psu in there and it booted first time no troubles.. so looks like a new psu is in order.. any recommendations? dont tell me to get a 480w thing for £80... im looking at £30ish.. its the family computer, isnt overclocked.. just has a harddrive, a cdrom, and an 80mm fan to power.. nothing overkill

hows about that for £40ish inc shipping or do you reckon the 300w will suffice (being about £10 cheaper....)
