how can I get rid of windows messenger?

this damn thing keeps restarting itself when I end the process in xp. I also uninstalled it and stopped the service running. This has all failed and it keeps restarting itself(and using about 8mg ram). I use MSN messenger but I used to be able to use this without windows messenger running.

Please help as this is driving me nuts!
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

You can't. If you go into Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs > Windows Components and remove Messenger through there it says it's removed but it's still on the system and running.
The best you can do is stop it running. Start > Run > Type: gpedit.msc > User Config > Admin. Templates > Windows Components > Windows Messenger > enable both. Only downside to it is Outlook Express hangs slightly when you open it. It shouldn't bother you after that

Go to www.dougknox.com and look for the Windows Messenger -Remove vb script, (WinXP Tips page, bottom of the right column) it is the only way I have found to truly remove Windows Messenger and works fine.

The reason Windows Messenger keeps running is because the Alexa trojan MS built into XP utilises it for reporting. Took me a while to figure out what was going on with my firewall because of this, removed Windows Messenger and all is fine. MSN Messenger 7 full release is out and works well. There are options to stop it starting at boot and you can also delink it from Outlook Express

    Cheers
