Question Help to remove Gas Piston from Gaming Chair

    Hi there,

Anyone have any idea how I remove this gas piston from the under part of the gaming chair? It needs to be a safe way so that I can use the piston on another chair. It's secured to the mechanical part under the chair... the metal part that adjusts height etc.

    Chair: Vertagear PL6000

Was going to post images but can't due to this being a new forum account

It's usually a friction fit, so it gets pretty tightly pressed it on a well used chair.

To remove mine, I spray a little WD40, leave it for ten minutes and set the piston through a hole in my workbench so it is suspended only the "spider" and hit it with a hammer. Well, I cover the end of the piston with a bit of scrap wood to protect it before hitting it with a hammer.

The WD40 really worked - without it, I was thumping away for ages, the first time I did one, with no results.

Hi, thanks for replying so quick. This guy uses a hammer to smash the metal part that's causing the problems (like all other videos i've seen)... which i'm hoping isn't the only way to do it.

Your options are press it out, assuming you have access to suitable equipment, or knock it out. If it's the latter, you will need a hammer.

The end of the piston that's fitted to the seat adjustment mechanism will likely be the hardest to release - you'll need a hammer and dolly - I have the bar from an old dumbbell that works just fine as a dolly, but (again) WD40 or some other kind of penetration oil/release agent will do most of the work for you.

I've have done this on my chair a few years ago, its not as easy as what you see on youtube. The tools i used was a pipe wrench, hammer and plusgas (penetrating fluid). What i did was turn the chair upside down, spray loads of plusgas on the piston connected to the chair seat, make a cuppa tea while the fluid penetrates, lay the chair on the side, grip it with the pipe wrench, wrap the pipe wrench handle end with a rag(so you don't get bits of metals flying off it) and hammer it really hard. This will probably take a long time as their maybe rust inbetween it. Have fun!

Re: Help to remove Gas Piston from Gaming Chair

I drove mine our with a bit of old wood to protect the piston and keep whacking it with a mallet until it came out.

It always seems to be that metal bit just under the seat that fails, and the piston is a git to remove. Good luck
