    Psu/power issue

Morning all - hoping that everyone is enjoying the sun

I finally cleared out my case of the old system and fitted in the new, but I wanted to be able to run the old system initially to transfer some date and then as a second system.
I was able to remove the motherboard/cooler/ram complete and planned to run it initially ‘on the bench’ so to speak (on top of my desk) Handy as the gigabyte gaming7 has a proper on/off switch on the actual board ! It had previously been running with a 1080ti and I now have it running off the 4970k APU
Needed to do a cmos reset to get the APU to trigger ( as I forgot to switch it before I uninstalled) Also running off an original Bequiet 650w Dark Power PRO modular PSU that I had in the loft.
Here comes the rub, will boot into BIOS no problem, and will sit in bios indefinitely. However, as soon as I log in to windows, I get about 5 seconds before black screen and reboot.

Info to add - I can’t find the 8 pin P8 cpu connector for the PSU, so I am using the 4 pin EPS plugged into half of the motherboard socket (I had read this should supply adequate power for stock 4790k)

I have disconnected all HDD’s other than the m2 boot drive, GPU and sound card disconnected too. Bios set to default ‘optimum’ settings.

    Any thoughts welcome please ....

    Re: Psu/power issue

Have you tried safe mode for windows? It could be a driver that's unhappy with the change to running off the APU or something.

Hey Kalniel That is exactly the kind of advice I needed ! Thank you.
    I will check that tonight.
Having never used an APU before - I take it I should unistall GeForce drivers etc ?

Yes, they probably don't play well if you're not using a GPU. There probably also need to be some other driver updates/windows configuration for your APU, getting into safe mode will at least prove the hardware is working OK, then boot into safe mode with networking and run windows update at the least.

I have loaded into safe mode, removed the Nvidia drivers, downloaded and added the Intel driver, from the intel site (albeit a beta from 2016....)
Runs indefinitely in safe mode, no problems. So happy I booted back into W10 and into full resolution bliss, opened google, navigated to Hexus to send Kalniel a great big thank you and then I crashed.....
    Straight back to black.

Does the fact that it is running in safe mode no problem rule out any PSU/power issues? As that's the only possible weak point in the HW line up (given that it's been in the loft for 6-7 years!!)
Or does anyone have any other thoughts?

At this point I would do a clean install, that way you can rule out a lot of gremlins from previously installed drivers etc

    Re: Psu/power issue

Thanks Jon, solid and fair advice! - However, it's exactly what I am trying to avoid (for now) as I wanted to transfer files etc whilst new new PC settles in. I may have to, but I'd really like to be able to sort this out for now without a wipe.

Maybe try a live linux usb stick and see if it crashes while using that

It potentially rules out hardware as an issue - safe mode is windows without drivers, so your crash is caused by a driver/software program loading. That's likely to be purely software, but it can also be bad hardware that's related to the driver failing to load.

Given safe mode works, I'd now move on to clean booting windows, which is a normal boot with startup drivers/services disabled - then you can add them in/remove ones you think might be problematic:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-a97a1807f3dd

If selective startup doesn't help, next step is to try repairing windows with sfc and dism image checking (can take you through that next), then failing that, you can try an in-place install which would reinstall windows but keep your files.

I did spend last night with my ear to the ageing bequiet PSU - as it was making some unusual noises that just don’t sound right - not coil whine, more like pops and squeaks and cracks. Almost certainly not the root - but I’m going to try an alternative too just to rule that out..

    Re: Psu/power issue

Yeah that doesn't sound too good. Also I read your post more carefully and saw you were stable in normal windows for a while before crashing, so perhaps that is more hardware related. Sometimes power supplies can be stable under full load but struggle on standby/low loads - in safe mode the various power saving modes might not be active.

Haswell CPUs were the first to debut some newer lower power modes. However, can't you just attach the old HDDs/SSDs to the new system and copy the files over??

Also, what did you eventually upgrade too(going from your other thread)??

Morning Cat Yes, but I was hoping to have the 2 systems side by side for the first month or so, as there are always stored passwords, settings as well as files that I realise would be very handy.....
After which point I was planning to clean install and then use as second unit.

I EVENTUALLY ended up going with:

5800X (picked up from local PC builder who had it leftover - sealed and new for £290)
Tomahawk 570S (waiting for this held up the build...)
2x16 crucial 3600 as per your recommendation
    Noctua NH U12A
    Samsung 980pro 500
    WD SN550 Blue 1TB

Carried 1080ti, Corsair AX860 and Liam Li PCV750 plus will probably install my Creative XiFi Fatality at some point. Will upgrade the GPU as and when the market is back to ‘normal’ - but no desperate need for now.

Thanks again Cat for all your help with the selection process

    Update.

So yesterday the trusty Amazon driver delivered a Corsair RM550X which I managed to swap over from the vintage bequiet after dinner and putting the kids to bed. Fingers firmly crossed I booted straight into full windows - and sat and waited, and waited. Ran windows update, and 30 minutes (and no crashing!) later I concluded that the best place for the 13 year old bequiet was the dustbin !!

Thank you all for the contributions - case solved

Out of interest can you do me a favour please?? Can you run Thaiphoon Burner and see what memory ICs the memory kit has? I heard there might be a change to the Crucial 3600MHZ kits!

I suspected it was a PSU issue! When using the IGP it probably is moving into lower power modes, and hence causing instability!
