Computer not switching on

Hi Folks,

I recently upgraded my pc, so I kept my older parts and just got a new mobo and ram.

The old stuff are: OCZ 650w psu, 2700x, GTX1070 and a few ssd's.

I have installed these new parts today:

ASRock B450 Pro R2.0 and Patriot Viper Steel Series DDR4 16GB (2x 8GB)

However, the computer won't turn on. No fans spinning, and nothing other than the light on my USB panel at the front.

I had thought I had put the power switch jumper in the wrong place etc or something, but I def haven't.

Any ideas?

I find it hard to believe it's the old stuff, as it was working fine just over a week ago and hasn't been moved. But I don't know how to know if it's the motherboard or not.

I can pull a stick out of another computer. Would that stop it from powering up completely? I had though ram would maybe just stop it from posting. But I'm not even getting a fan spin-up. The motherboard doesn't have any leds

I'd start by removing RAM & GPU and also unplug/remove drives.

Take it to the basics and start with Mobo, CPU & PSU only. And CPU fan of course.

If you get power, start by adding components 1x1: RAM, then GPU, then drives. See which causes it to fail.


If still no power with the basics, reseat CPU.

What's the BIOS revision listed on the mobo box? Does the revision support your CPU, as in the unlikely scenario you need a BIOS upgrade (hopefully not).

Ensure your PSU is compatible with the new board. A 2011 PSU might be stretching it these days, but should be OK.

I'd start by unplugging the PSU from the wall socket.
As above start with the bare minimum plugged in, and I mean bare minimum, no LED's or switches on the front panel, nothing, I've seen it before where a USB keyboard was causing a short on a panel and was stopping a machine from powering up.
Get your manual and find out what 2 pins ou need to short to power it up and go from there.
If you have the space then I'd go down to bare board out of the case, just RAM GPU and CPU, build up from there.
You could also try unplugging everything from the PSU and just short the 2 pins that tell it to power up and make sure the PSU itself kicks into life.

Yeah can do. I would try try a different stick of ram as its the quickest,easiest option then if that fails run through what others have said

So, tried cpu, mobo and psu. Nothing. Will look at CPU now.

So.................. I f===========================ked up. A pin bent. When gently trying to put it back, it broke off. On the upside, board is powering up. Unsure how it will go from this stage though.... lol ffs

You can get the AM4 Pinout image online (nothing official so just search) and see what the pin is, hopefully it's just a ground pin

Indeed a lot of pins you can lose without issue as long as its not an important pin of course

So far, windows has been installed without any lock-ups etc.

However, in task manager, it tells me I have 8gb ram - but does say 16 GB is connected. So it could be linked to that. If at the end of this, I lose 8gb of ram, I'd count myself lucky. I can always change slots. Likely too early to conclude I'm out of the woods though. The dam CPU stuck to the cooler when I took it out. Wasn't expecting it. Raging tbh. But .... what can you do.

There you go, possibly just killed a memory channel.

Try swapping RAM and only populating 1 slot, you will be able to confirm if that's the case & which channel it is.

Damn that's a bummer!

My last bent pin was a AMD K6-2, luckily able to bend it back and all ok...

Fingers X you manage to get all your RAM discovered.


If you come to replace it, you could still sell as Spares/Repairs on eBay, someone will buy it and solder a new pin no doubt.

The only impact so far is that it won't register 2 sticks of ram. Just one. I can live with this. But yea, sod's law. It got best when taking it out to check and it was stuck to the cpu cooler. I was bending it back gently but it just broke off If I had a proper setup, I'd solder it myself. But it looks like it needs a very precise workstation to repair. I don't have that or the equipment. A new CPU would be cheaper haha.

Like I said, I can live with 8GB of ram for a PC that will mainly be used for the internet, youtube, and office work. But I am still raging
