I took it that, that was the admin password. Not too many people setup windows for home use and don't give themselves admin rights. Doing a search i did somewhere of some guy using a bootable linux disc with NTFS/FAT enabled and using a brute force dictionary, password crack tool.

Create a DOS boot disc, retrieve the file C:\WINNT\System32\Config\SAM, run it through LC4. Google is your friend

its just sometimes people set up a user account but don't specifically set up an admin account. Its easy enough then to enter in safe mode, access the admin account and then change the user passwords. There is a floppy that'll go straight to the SAM file and let you change the pasword by overwriting it, although you still can't see what the old password actually was. There's a Knoppix CD that'll let you do a few odds and ends as well.

    norky is right
windows 2000 sam files are relatively easy to crack with L0pht crack 4 etc - just takes a while

alternatively use a dos / linux boot disk to access the ntfs partition and copy the stuff you need and then reinstall.

Some stuff for you to google as they may help :

    hirens boot cd
    www.bootdisk.com
    ntfspro
    have fun and good luck

    Kip

P.S - Its very doable - i have done hundreds of these.
