    Dead motherboard?

Hi, I have just put together a few old components with a new cpu and new memory and when I turn it on I just get a blank screen. I believe my brother had some trouble with this Motherboard in the past so my guess is that is the problem, what Im not sure about is how to check whether I am right. If its definitely the motherboard Ill just buy a cheap one from eBuyer but it would be great to know for certain before I waste any more money on this thing.

So my question is; could a faulty motherboard cause my problem? and is there any way of checking?

    New bits:
    Duron 950 cpu
    256MB PC2100 Kingston Value RAM

    Old bits:
    DVD Drive
    250W PSU
    20GB Hard Drive
    Soltek SL-75DRV4 Motherboard
    ATi Radeon 8500 LE

    Thanks for looking.

Answer: Hell, yes, it most certainly could. As to how to check, you'd need to either check the other components on a known working board, or swap components for known working ones on that board. If you've already done that, then it's probably going to be the motherboard.

If it doesn't even POST (bleeps) then it's probably the mobo. Quite often if it's a different component (CPU, memory, graphics, etc.) then you'll get some diagnostic bleeps. The mobo may also have some diagnostic LEDs on it although you'll need to get the manual for it to make sense of what the different colours/combinations mean.

I had not originally attached the PC speaker.

Having done so now when I turn the PC on i get one long beep (1 or 2 seconds long). But nothing happens on screen. Does that mean it has POSTed? I looked at the list of beep codes on the sticky thread above, but none seemed to match mine. Does anyone know what one long beep on a Soltek SL-75DRV4 means?

    Thanks.

Anyone have any idea whether one long beep at startup means it is/could be/is not the motherboard at fault?

    Thanks.

Isn't that usually a ram problem? You need to know whether it's an award or ami bios diagnose the beep codes.
