Virus or Ram?
Hi Guys
Just wondering if any of you pro’s could shed a little light on this situation, I have a shuttle SN41G2. it has a 2800 xp chip, and 768mb of 2700 DDR. This setup has worked trouble free for 12 months, but recently started turning itself off.
It belongs to my friend so I went around and took a look, event viewer seems fine, I checked the bios and upped the fan speed and checked the system temps which seemed fine again, with the cpu only hitting 50c under load. (good for a shuttle)
In my next step I took out the 512 chip and then booted up and updated the virus protection software and ran a full scan, finding two Trojans…. Can a Trojan make the pc turn off dead at random times?
The pc is running fine at the moment with just 256 of ram and the virus’s killed, I will have to test it with all the ram in but I was just wondering about the virus and could that do that ? and any other advise you guys have

boot knopppix for a while, see if the problems persist. yes = hardware, no = software
-
ok, i will do, have you used this before whats it all about?
-
the most basic of hardware diagnostics - boot a linux cd, to see whether windows is to blame.
-
ok, can you recommend a mem tester that will run from windows aswell?
-
no. running _ANYTHING_ from windows is a waste of your time.
if you want a proper memory test, then use memtest86, which comes in bootable iso form (and is handily included as a boot option on some bootable linux cds). memtest doesn't run ANY os, so is immune to virii etc

thanks mate i will try memtest86 first, can Trojans turn a pc off? or is that not something they do?
