HELP is XP over
Hi
Im in a mess!
I tried to install an ethernet card but it seems to have corrupted my computer.
When windows trys to boot I get the following message.
'system32\drivers\ntfs.sys is corrupted
insert startup disk and press r.'
So i try to restore the system using the xp cd
It wont get past loading kernel.dll. I get the following message
'file setup.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7'
Does anyone know what this means, can i get xp back. If not can i recover my data?
HELP ME!!!!
-
Boot from the Windows XP cd and enter recovery mode. Then use the command prompt to copy the ntfs.sys file from the CD onto your install.
-
cant get that far into recovery mode.
when i put in the xp cd it asks if you want to install raid drivers and then if you want to boot from recovery disk (which i dont have) then i get the second error message. I cant get into recovery mode.
Is all hope lost.
Im so gutted. I was just about to transfer everything over to another computer.
-
to recover files, slap hard drive in another computer and copy to your hearts content.
-
Will this work?
Never done that before.
If this is possible, could i replace the ntfs.sys file on my other hard drive. would this solve the problem?
-
as long as your copying the file you need, i dont see why it wouldnt work.
Worth a try.

I had to use the recovery console recently and it's real touch and go whether things can be salvaged or not. One of the things you may need to do is extract the file you need off the XP CD using the 'extract' command. You may also not be able to extract it directly into the Windows directory. I had to extract the file into a temp directory and copy it over.
My problem was caused by installing a driver that I shouldn't have!

My mate is going to make a recovery floppy disk for me tommorow so hopefully that might work. He says it has done in the past.
If this doesnt work ill try what you say taz.
Failing that it looks as if ill just have to hook up a hard drive to another machine (i.e. the one im using now which doesnt have a floppy drive) and copy the data.
-
Well I tried the floppy and it didnt work so im in the process of copying all my files from the corrupted drive to another.
I will also the file that was corrupted from my new computer to my old one. Hey it might work?
-
The recovery console is always a pain in the bum and rarely works.
if you know whic file is corrupt - my prefered method is to use a boot disk that can read ntfs partitions and copy the file into the os manually.
Failing that - slap the drive in another machine - copy your vital data of and hey presto - ready to go.

Try downloading http://www.datapol-technologies.com/...are/index.html onto a floppy.
This gives you read/write access to ntfs volumes.
You should be able to copy ntfs.sys from your XP disk to your windows installation.
If you have a service pack installed copy it from C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 instead.
