    Noisey Hard Drive!!!!

Hi. I have built my own pc with a bit of help and Im really very pleased apart from this ....my hard drive is very noisey. Its a Maxtor Diamond Max SATA
250 gb 7200rpm. It sounds like a gieger counter whenever it does a task. This is really rather annoying and is a bit on the loud side.
Is this normal or is it duff.Operationally its faultless just makes a lot of noise.Any views on this would be appreciated guys and gals. If it should be quiet I will return it,if its a quirk of the model i'll have to learn to live with it..Thanks.

I have known some maxtors to be quite noisy. An Arctic Cooling Case should solve that problem. The hard disk is supported on rubber suspensions, and the case is nearly noiseless if you're looking for peace and quiet.

My maxtor drive is fine, make sure that is is screwed in tight. If it only makes a massive sound when in heavy use I would be careful as it sounds dodgy. Run scandisk on it and see what is throws up.

oh, I should have added, yes, do the thorough Checkdisk [start] [run]
    chkdsk C: /F
and it will ask you to reboot in order to complete the operation (I'm assuming you use XP, else just use scandisk)

Is this a common problem with the diamond max? I've a few mates who have them and they are quite noisy, I just thought it was normal and all maxtors were like it

Maxtor DM10 range is one of the quietest disk ranges you can currently buy (Check out PCPro this month) if your wanting large capacities.
That utility will give you 3 options, varying from loudest but best performing, to the opposite.

Repositioned and mounted on rubber and alot quieter though still audible. Iam of the opinion the aluminium sides play a large part in amplifiing the noise. As this is a Coolermaster Wavewmaster its worth bearing in mind before a purchase or recomendation. Thanks for all your help lads/lasses.Gravy.

Hardmounting (normal fixing) of drives amplifies HDD idle and in particular seek noise sooooo much! You can either cover the drive up with a silent enclosure or rubber mounts but by far the cheapest and best way is to suspend your drive. Go to a craft shop and buy a metre of elastic. Suspend the HDD from the bottom of the rack via the elastic and just about all seek noise will be eliminated.

Although the diamondmax 10 is the quietest drive made by maxtor, it's easily 3 times noisier than the spinpoint but the suspension should make it more than tolerable.

Another alternative is to sell your Maxtor drive and buy a Seagate Barracuda.

My Seagates are very very quiet. The only time you hear them is the slight clicking during access - but no whine-from-hell like my old Maxtor and WD drives..
