Exclamation Explorer high cpu usage when browsing video folders, Windows 7 64Bit

I have disabled thumbnails by going into

"Windows Explorer, click ion Tools->Folder options. 2. Click the View tab. 3. Check the follow option. Always show icons, never thumbnails" and that fixes the problem but if i untick this and browse my video folders that have .mk2 .Mp4 ect in thumbnail view the explorer process will max out at 100% to the point i can not even use task manager as PC is so slow so am forced to reboot.

It is obviously decoding the video files for some reason. How can I disable this behaviour? As miss having this feature of windows when viewing pictures folder.

Any help or ideas would be great, cheers

It could depend on how many video files you have in your folder.

I used to have all my moives in one folder, like a hundred 700MB files, and I got the same thing. I believe the thumbnail system takes a frame from the begining of the file to display as the thumbnail. But if your vid files are large it has to process the whole thing to aquire the frame. If you have lots of vid files this can end up taking blummin' ages.

I now have all my vids separated into differnet folders A-B, C-D, etc. Now I never have a problem. This has also helped the Xbox when streaming. The Xbox would freeze when I had all those files in one folder.

Just htink when you have hundreds of photos in a folder, and you scroll down the list. It can take a second to update the thumbnails. That's just one image. Now do that when you have video files with thousands of images per file.

    Hope this helps

Have you got any codecs installed? I seem to remember this being a feature of Haali or FFDShow perhaps. Windows by default, without any codecs, doesn't show thumbnails for many types of video content IIRC.
