Problems playing DVD's on my system

I'm having problems playing DVDs. Basically, Power DVD will play the audio, but no video, whereas Windows Media Player shows a corrupted screen before hard locking the computer (I'm not even left with a display, just a flashing monitor light necessitating a reboot).

I'm using XP Home SP2, Cat 5.3 drivers - everything else is in my sig. Any clues?

What region is you dvd drive and dvd? Have you tried other dvds?

It's region 2 at the moment, and it has the same problem with all discs. However, these discs will work in my DVD player on my TV.

Try getting some software that runs alongside like DVD region free or AnyDVD, you're drive or software may be picking up on the copy protection as its always getting updated and could be causing the probs you are getting.

Its not a pre dual layer (that must be really old) drd-rom drive is it>?

As my sig says, it's a Samsumg SM352 CDRW/DVD combo drive. I've not gone for a DVD writer yet, as I barely write any CDs as it is. I might try changing the region and see how it goes, although none of the discs I've tried are imports.

Have you downloaded and installed any Codecs recently? They can be a nightmare. Have you tried de-installing and re-installed Power DVD?

I think Media Player uses the same Codecs. You could try running DECCHECK and select a different default codec.
