Please help,dont know what to try next

Hi guys currently im trying to fix a friends computer where he wanted me to reinstall windows xp for him and do a clean reinstall setup.
So i went to reinstall windows via booting from the win xp cd rom which it boots from but then as its goes and loads the various drivers .etc to install windows and then comes up with 'setup is starting windows' at the bottom of the screen then it just stops and then it comes up with a blue screen with the following error:

STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF9E7D524,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)

And goes no further,So i tuck the hard drive out of the ssytem and put it in mine and formatted and installed with no problems at all then ive put it back in the sytem and it just Blank screens where it would normally come up with the win xp boot screen it is just completely blank.

Ive also tried to boot in safe mode and it stops at

Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

And just freezes at that point.

As anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be or how to go about fixing it as ive tried everything i can think of but still dont work ,Hes had xp on the sytem before which is why i dont understand how it wont install anymore,Any ideas would be great,Thanks

if that HDD was working ok before, once upon a time, and now it seems unwell, I'd have first suggested a boot sector virus.

But as it worked in your PC, I'm stumped.

Did you do a full format, or a quick one?

And did you start from scratch by deleting the partitions and making a new one?

maybe a problem with something on the motherboard. I have seen faulty RAM do this before however that was only once. Have a good look at the IDE cable that is attached to the hard drive for any splits.

Try taking all PCI cards out and putting them back one by one until the problem occurs again. I once had this problem during the XP install due to an old PCI card that was incompatible.

Is the hard drive detected correctly in the BIOS? Do you have RAID configured in the BIOS?

Something may have got disturbed in transit. Looks like a memory error.

If all else fails, remove all cards, drive cables & ram carefully and then re-seat each one with equal care. Re-format with an old win old '98 boot floppy then try instaling XP. Failing that, check your ram with memtest or similar.

If XP won't start it may be due to a damaged boot sector or a missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files.

To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console (as above). At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"

Ok thanks guys i finally managed today i dont know if its the best way but i first installed ME which worked and then through me i installed Xp and it worked doing a full setup not update but i also replaced the IDE cable so it may of had somthing to do with that also.
