HDD size difference

ok i have a 40gb hdd showing as a 15gb and a 15 gb as a 6gb ... any ideas.

I think it has something to do with the PATA cables i am using, would this be possible??

What motherboard are you using?

Does the BIOS detect the correct size?

th bios does not detect the right size.

i am wondering wether its the ide cable as it came from a pre build. sometimes these will cap a hdd, and in this case the IDE cable has a hole in it.... so itlooks kinda like this.

If you imagine that as an ide cable the missing part of the cable is that hole.

Never seen them with a hole in. I''ve seen floppys with inverted segments but not IDE.

Try switching the cable with another system.

Where is it showing at 2 15's and a 6?
If its in windows then it'll just be partitioned, has it already got windows on it?
What version if so...

Random one that, sounds like its pooped, I'd stick it in a USB caddy or something just to see what it does but deffo sounds borked...

will try reset the bios and test hdd in a different machine

What brand are they? check out the manufacturers website, they often have utils to determine hardware faults, i think WD even have on ethat will fix exactly that error.

but the 15 + 15 + 6 = 36 seems about right for a 40gb harddrive doesnt it?

is there any sensitive data on it?

if not, try and install windows and delete all partitions.

or examine the drive with a sledge hammer

take the harddrive out.

and tale down all the information you see, and post here all the infomation you think would be helpful (manufacturing date / serial number / manufacturer / model number etc etc)

I think it was 2 drives muddyfox470 - the 40 was being detected as a 15, and a seperate 15 being detected as a 6Gb. Though there's every chance I'm completely wrong!

i will get some detection software and will possibly reset my cmos to TOTAL deafault
