    cant get printer to work

hi, the other day i bought a second-hand printer from someone needing to get rid of old stuff. it is an hp officejet 700 series which does printing, copying, scanning and faxing. the printer is fairly old and designed for windows 98.

i get all the cables set up and everything and turn on the pc. i though being xp it would auto detect it and install it on its own like it did with my other printer, but it didnt. xp knew there was new hardware but couldnt tell what it was. so i tried installing it from the cd that came with the printer. it installs fine, but i cant get it to work properly.

i tested the printer alone and it works, but i cannot print from the pc. for some reason it cant conect to the pc. the other thing is that i cant open the software for the printer either so i cant run any diagnostics.

i tried a number of things on the help file but no luck im thinking it doesnt work with xp, but it should.

any help will be appreciated. thanx.

Daft question maybe, but is the file you downloaded compressed, and if so have you decompressed it?

Just for chance is the printer offline? and also is it set as the default printer.

    Sometime it is easily overlooked

thanx for the help but still no luck

Daft question maybe, but is the file you downloaded compressed, and if so have you decompressed it?
when i open the file it unpacks the contents and then launches the installer, so thats not it.

Just for chance is the printer offline? and also is it set as the default printer.
thats not the problem anymore. the printer didnt work because it didnt have the xp drivers, but now i got them from the link da_ging posted. the problem is i cant install them because i get the error message i posted before. if i colud install them im pretty sure the printer would work.

so does anyone know what i can do about that error message? should i try moving the file to the directory the message suggests or better not?

    thanx.

Have you got SP2 installed by any chance? Looking at the HP site there seems to be issues with this printer and SP2. If you here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...us&rule=17728# you'll see issues with installing this printer under XP. You can ask questions online through the hP website which may be the best place to get the answer.
