    PC no work!!!

My pc wont work! (see sig)

I have been having trouble before see http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=50518

now i was just browsing the net when it just rebooted, for the second time of the day! The first time it just carryed on working but this time it wont work.

It starts a see the dfi logo and a bit of text that it shows and then it moves to a black screen with a flashing _ at the top left hand corner. If i try to type nothing comes up.

Now the scary bit is that once when it was on the _ screen it also showed "K " in blue.

Could i have some sort of virus? Last night avast picked up Win 32 : Vibpack but i cant find any info on this.

I have tryed reseting the cmos, re seating the ram, trying only one stick of ram, reseated the cpu, re-attatched the hdd and i have had a go in the bios but i dont really know what i could change.

    what the hell is wrong?

Luckly yesterday i did a full backup of all my data, thank god.

    HELP ME!!!!!!!!

Time to start from scratch I guess...

Unplug everything but the minimum, everything except power, cpu, memory (one stick if poss), gfx, and perhaps a floppy...get it to boot, and run memtest86.

If that works, try putting stuff in piece by piece. Then try rotating....could it be weak PSU? Do you have a spare gfx card to try? Spare HDD? Memtest will tell you if its bad RAM.

Can you get into the bios to see cpu temps etc?

*Edit* didn't read what you'd already done...if you have a setting in the bios for RAM, go "safe"....if it has presets, I mean....try without CD drive, getting into windows, no PCI stuff...

Have you been overclocking? You need to test things piece by piece. Does the pc boot up fine with no hard drive installed? Do you have any other hard drives to test it with? I would recommend reformatting your drive if it boots up (the bios I mean). What is the drives smart status and have you checked it with any utilities?

When you reboot can you get to the boot order menu? Not the one in BIOS (trying to find out how far the POST is getting here)

I have post LEDs on my mobo and all seems correct.

Anyway, i unpluged the HDD and it then let me boot from CD. This makes me think it could be a boot virus. The K thing could not have happened any other way. I was gunna do a reinstall anyway so ill try that, im just downloading the x64 trial.

EDIT: Some kind of boot virus, apparently a normal virus can plant a boot virus in the boot section of the HDD and so cause what i have. I wouldnt say so if i had not seen the K thing.

Something must be up with your OS then, you got windows updates on?

    Edit

Also, use Windows XP cd, get into the Recovery CONSOLE.

    Run: Fixmbr and fixboot.

Seeing a twitch in your BIOS is weird if you're not overclocking.

If you really wanna test the RAM, go into the BIOS and go to teh bottom of the memory options. Turn on MemTest and let it run on reboot. If all is well, reboot again and turn it off. The DFI boards have Memtest 86 right in them. It's sweet.

Test 5 and 8 I believe are usually two of the most sensitive. If you're not overclocking, and even if you are, you should have zero errors on all Memtest tests.

Takes awhile, but it's worth it to troubleshoot the problem. I was getting corrupted BIOS text here and there when I was testing the top end of my CPU and RAM speeds.

You probably did not have a boot virus. I have never seen one, anyway.

I ran memtest for 8hr 30mins and it reported no errors

What else could have caused it?

a recommendation for te future.....dont show the dfi logo, it hides important things going on in the background. if you had it off you could see what was being detected and what was going on.

the option to turn it off is at the very bottom of the basic bios settings menu (top left i think)

if you suspect it might be a hard drive problem then turn on smart monitoring in the bios - that will give you warnings on boot up if you have a drive problem. If you want to thrash your system to see if you can get it to fail a test then SiSoft Sandra is a good start as you can configure it to run as long as you like for the various parts of your computer - use the Burn-in tool to set it up.
