ati2dvag causing BSOD in XP SP2

I'm pretty happy with my system that has been running well for a couple of months now. I'm running everything at stock speeds for the sake of quietness and cooler components.

However, there is the odd occasion (perhaps once a week) when I get a BSOD which Windows thinks is being caused by ati2dvag.dll. This tends to happen when i'm surfing on the Internet with a couple of browser windows open and there is network activity taking place. It's always the same DLL that appears to be the cause of the problem.

Any ideas? I've done a Google search and there appears to be an indication that disabling ACPI appears to fix this problem but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they managed to fix it.

Does the event viewer give you any more details (Administrative Tools in Control Panel)?

Also, give Dr Watson a try and make sure you have the latest DirectX and use the diagnostic tool (Start, Run and then type in dxdiag).

Lastly, is another driver an option?

The only problem event that I can see in Event Viewer is that the ASInsHelp failed to start as it couldn't find the file specified. I have no idea what the ASInsHelp service is!

I've got a generic ATi Radeon X800 XT card and am using the Catalyst 5.3 drivers (problem also happened with 5.2 drivers). I wasn't aware there were other driver options available.

Will give Dr Watson and dxdiag a try.

Not in safe mode. I have uninstalled the cats and run driver cleaner on a normal Windows boot-up. I'll try safe mode tonight.

Reason being that some of the files that require removal will still be locked by windows running. Also run the Cab cleaner on driver.cab and sp2.cab in safe mode as even if you remove the old and oem drivers with drive cleaner when windows boots it'll see there are copys in the cab files but not the system drivers folder an simply copy them back which is not good

Funnily ( or not ) enough, I had/have the same problem with my X800XT.

I've had to do a full re-format/install and it's currently holding stable. The one thing I haven't done so far, is install any nForce drivers for the CD that came with my system.

I'm just using what XP installs as standard.

Finally got mine sorted ( shipping problems being the biggest delay ).

Needed a new motherboard to cure the fault, but now I don't have any sound

5.3 is an old driver update to the latest 5.8 should fix it.

N.B uninstall 5.3 then use drivercleaner3 to remove all ati and nvidia files then install 5.8
