    Busted memory?

help! i put together a new pc recently and with one problem after another its come down to just a few,

    1. i try to run a media file 15 mb big, and it gives me the error
'Your computer is running low on memory. Quit other programs, and then try again.'
I have 1gb of corsair xms memory, and over 1500 mb of virtual memory set, whats going on?

    2. something is up with my hard drive, it makes those loud creaky sounds when i open folders or loading up games and such, i think this is the hard drive.

any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

I'm guessing it actually says your running low on virtual memory. Check to see what's running in task manager as something is eating up your memory, I don't think your memory problem is caused by teh hard drive (unless you have no page file)

    What drive do you have?

may just be the heads reading.

I agree with killie99, check background tasks.

    What are your full specs?

    full specs r:

    abit an8 fatal1ty
    amd 64 3700 san diego
    1 gb corsair xms
    geforce 7800 gtx
    200 gb maxtor hard drive
    LG dvd drive
    aerocool turbine power 550
    windows xp home

its not that i think the memory problem is harddrive related, but the harddrive is making awful noises, games take a while to load and some game menu's lag alot. Its really scaring me now, the harddrive didnt sound funny yesterday

i checked the task manger before, page file usage is onlny 166mb at the moment and it says i have 800 mb of physical still free, problem still persists

I'd get that drive checked out, I wasn't sure if it was a new one or not.

Try to reinstall your media player and codecs, could just be a dodgy file.

    Try restarting too.

Run some diagnostic programs like chkdsk and defragment it.

There may be some damaged clusters but drives shouldn't change the sound they make after a few weeks.

can you enable SMART monitoring for the harddrive in the BIOS (i'm not familiar with your mobo)? If you can then set it and look for messages on power up that SMART is enabled. If you go to the maxtor site I'm sure you'll find there are some files you can download to test out your harddrive.

thanks for the help guys, unfortunately i dont have a floppy drive so most of that stuff is useless to me, i used an old norton utilities disc to check my harddrive and it didnt locate any errors... the pc is new so dessential data does not need backing up

i'll phone scan tomorrow and request a replacement, there must be something up with it, the noise is terrible. I did, however run an 8.53 mb big video file, the lagging game menus were sorted (a differant problem) is this just because its a smaller file? ill try to find a bigger file to run, something is making me think that it might just be something completely unrelated and that windows is just being tarded saying its todo with memory. maybe codecs or something stupid... help still appreciated

ok, i ran a bigger video file and it runs perfect, when i tried to run the accused video file i noticed windows media file says something in the corner about downloading a codec and then 'error downloading codec' sneakily appears in the corner for a few secounds. does anyone know anything about downloading codecs?

considering this video problem is isolated to itself i believe the harddrive has no physical problems.. but damn does it make the cranky noise

thanks for the help guys, ill phone scan about trying to replace it tomorrow... it shouldnt be making alot of noise when its new right?

btw pyle is that devvo in your sig?
