Subwoofer as seperate channel?

Bought some new 2.1 speakers from Scan a few days ago..

Went into the Nvidia sound settings whatsit (using nforce2 onboard sound); ran the wizard.. it attempts to play white noise through each speaker, including the sub.. though when it tries to play through the sub there is no sound so it ends up thinking there isn't a subwoofer present (or at least in the small diagram it draws of the speaker setup it doesn't).

Is it possible to get the subwoofer on a seperate channel?
I can't see how with only having one audio cable from the PC->Sub then from the sub into the L/R speakers..
I'm thinking the subwoofer itself must deal with what to play in this case?

This has always slightly confused me so I figured I should ask about it :)
It's only bothered me recently with having this new subwoofer which is pretty damn huge; but it doesn't seem to output that much tbh (compared with my 5.1 system on the DVD player at least). Turning up the bass on it seems to cause the speakers to simply output a lot more bass than it.

Is LFE enabled ?

Enable this and try to see the "point" where it sounds best to you. ( usually this is in the 90-130 range )

If there is only one cable going from the computer to the speakers (one 3.5mm stereo jack yeah?) then there is no seperate connection for the sub and so the Nvidia setup should read as two speakers, no subwoofer output.

The subwoofer will have either a level control or a crossover control (or both) actually on it (do you have the speaker model package)?

If your trying to output a seperate sub channel it'll just be going nowhere and cutting off the bass to your speakers (and your sub) and sending it into the middle of nowhere.

unrealrocks: Yeah only one cable, nvidia setup does read as two speakers.
If I'm understanding you correctly; there is a level control "subwoofer bass control" on the wired remote - but like I said increasing it seems to increase the bass from the speakers massively (eventually ending in distortion) and the subwoofer only slightly..

LFE = Low Frequency Effects...i.e Sub-bass.

set yer nvidia up as a 2.0 setup. it might be that on 2.1 its delibrately not sending bass to any of the speakers (its trying to send it down yer mic socket is my bet). which is why bass sounds like its only boosting on the main speakers - basically thats more midrange than bass - once you get some low end bass you can check the boost.

you can use this -> http://www.nch.com.au/tonegen/ <- (eval version) to check that bass is coming out - you should hear stuff down to about 30-35 hz - if it cuts out higher then your soundcard is cutting out the audio itself.

if there's only one cable, it's 2.0, end of. the sub will NOT be a separate channel.
