    FEAR demo problem

I'm getting less than a frame a second in the main game in FEAR. The previous corporate bits are OK (snowy mountain etc), but the main game bit isn't. I eventually get to a man sitting in a cell. He's very pixelated, so that leads me to believe that it's a graphics problem.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Well, it's obvious it's your total rubish graphics card, you need to get an Geforce MX 420 or something!.

    Just kidding .

So you can get in the menu OK? Have you tried playing around with the settings?

I use a 9800 pro, and it runs OK at default settings, but resolution at... erm, 1024x768 and 1280x960 (bit slower), but after tweaking the settings around I can get pretty good performance.

If you can't get into the menu at all, have you tried updating your drivers? Or possibly some hacked ones from www.guru3d.com ?.

IIRC try disabling some of the options, esp. soft shadows.

Sorry, I was in a bit of a rush this morning, so didn't do a very good post. If I'd have had time, I'd have said I've updated the drivers, so I know that's not the problem.

I can get onto the menus, but they sort of take time to react. For example, I move my mouse over a menu, and it only changes colour to show that it's selected a second later.

AFAIK, everything is on its minimum setting, so I really have no idea what else to try.

Well, my current system is in my sig (except swap the Geil for another Crucial). My GPU driver is 77.77. What other drivers do you need?

Right, now I'm really not happy. The bet on soldier demo is doing the same thing as FEAR . Has anyone got anything else I could try doing?

They were both downloaded using ABC, and both too ages to initialise the install. I double clicked the exe, but it would only start actually installing about 5 minutes later. Could it be a problem with the download?

    Reinstall windows!

Sounds like you have a crudload of spyware or something on your system slowing it down. Possibly a bad set of drivers or a lower level problem.

If i ever got a system to the point where i couldn't track how much spyware was on it, and it was taking 5 mins to start an install, i would reinstall windows on it just to rule out the software.

Clean installs are good for what ails ya.

Hmmmm, I might. I do run about 3 anti spyware programs regulaly, but ad-aware is generally the only thing that comes up with something, and it's generally the same thing too.

I've seen these symptons before when a fan has failed. Have a look at the GPU's temp in the Display Panel. The fan might well have come loose ...

Might be worth checking processor temp. as well.

I will check the temperature (when I get back to my PC next week), but I don't think it's the fan. I recently opened my PC to change some memory. As far as I could tell, everything seemed fine, although the graphics fan did seem a bit buzzey. AFAIK though, it's been like that for a while, and the noise it gone when the case is put back together. Is there a thing that checks graphics temperatures too?
