    Second opinion needed

    AAAArrrrrghhhh.....

I got the message I most dread when I'm working away from home. "Dad, your PC died"

Ok, this is the scenario, a power cut in the night. PC fires back up, all the lights fans etc come on. But nothing actually functions. Can't switch the PC off from the on off switch, the CD drives won't open, the monitor stays in standby.

Now considering I'm talking over the phone to my son seeing as I'm in far distant lands. My first instinct is that a power spike has dealt a death blow to the motherboard in some way (please, no comments about surge protectors at this stage). Which is an Abit IC7-G.

I have ruled out the PSU as all the moving parts and shiny parts are moving and shining. I have ruled out operating system because the thing doesn't even try to load the OS. The common denominator as far as I can see at this point is the motherboard.

Has anyone else come across this before? Anything I can try to confirm it's what I think it is? Other than shove in a new motherboard and see if it works.

    Thanks in advance.

    XP Pro SP2

It's awkward to troubleshoot as I have 7 hour time difference and getting hold of people at home when neither they or I am working.

I'll tell them to try the power off thing. So often the simple things that work. Maybe the switch block on the motherboard is causing the problem.

Probably needs a CMOS clear. Tell them to pull the plug out at the back, anyway.

agree with clearing the CMOS.... cant really say much else. i wouldn't assume Mobo straight away as generally the PSU is designed to blow if necessary.

I will drop him a line and tell him to pull the modules. Failing that I'm back in UK at the end of next month and I'll just have to do it myself.

Typical, come home for a week and end up fixing PCs and stuff. I swear everyone saves up all their techy problems until I get back because I "do sumthin' wiv computers". Unfortunately that would be routers and switches not PCs.

Zak, the switch off thing didn't work. It stubbornly refuses to switch off. Except by pulling the plug.

Ok, I sent pics of the mobo with arrows and labels, an adobe of the idiots guide and a bunch of things for my son to try.

I think I'd better buy some spare parts for when I get back and find out what he's fried.
