will formatting a hard drive get rid of a virus?

Think I have a virus on my main pc but eveytime I run a thorough virus scan, the pc keeps rebooting(even in safe mode). Std scan runs ok and does not detect anything. Tried to download another virus program(mcafee) and it will download but not install. Only other thing I can think of is formating my drive. Will this work?

    Any other options?

Formatting a drive should eradicate the virus. Beforehand, try going into safe mode and then running Stinger.

watch it - if you're going to format make sure you fdisk /mbr to clear the master boot record. Let your ram power down too...

I hate viruses - they make me feel dirty!

I'm sure that question has been asked a million times, and it's simply because they are too cowardly to do anything adventurous, so they seek out little mischeif by making viruses and downloading the worlds supply of hentai.

And yes, formatting does *usually* get rid of viruses

It's so long since I have formatted a drive like this. Please forgive my ignorance and remind me what fdisk/mbr does.

Viruses can reside in the MBR and aviod being removed by a normal Format.

But hold your horses. Are you sure it's a virus? Rebooting could be caused by many things, such a currupt windows installation, overheating/fauty hardware, harmless (sort of) spyware. Does it reboot at any other time? Try AVG first too, it's free.

Would rather try anything than have to go through a format and re-install(as frankly it's a pain in the rear end).

PC doesn't just reboot(but when it does it does it randomly, sometimes after a few mins, sometimes after half an hour). Progs have also stopped working properly all the time(so sometimes they work, sometimes they don't) and my internet is really playing up(icons not loading properly, some sites working ok, others not).

Prob I have if I have a corrupted windows install is that I'm not exactly sure how to use the windows repair option(I know how to get into it(by running a windows install and choosing the repair option rather than the install option) bu from there I have no clue where to go).

Also, reason I think it may be a virus is because I use avast for my antivirus and when on the net it suddenly came up that there was a virus contained within something I was downloading, I did delete it. It was only after that that my pc started behaving strangely. I ran a std scan on avast and it picked up another virus contained within the firefox profiles and got rid of it.

PC still behaved a bit strangely so tried doing a thorough scan and it was only on a thorough scan that it rebooted(when I have tried this numerous times, it starts the scan ok and then reboots at random intervals during the scan). It always completes a std scan which makes me think that there is something weird going on.

Spyware scan picks up nothing and I have a cool running pc(av temps about 30deg on case and 40-50 on cpu). All other hardware working ok.

Try an online scanner like kaspersky.
Boot and run memtest from a floppy or a CD. If your system is stable then its definitely windows thats the problem. If your system is not stable then its a hardware problem.

actually, some viruses can install themselves into the BIOS, so it may not work... but there quite rare, so it should work
