    Question XP System Failure

An attempt to install Norton Internet Security 2005 resluted in a software conflict due to my inadvertantly neglecting to uninstall eTrust antivirus. All the usual have failed: System Restore; Last Known Good Configuration etc. Safe Mode only gets as far as Installing apersonal Settings but sometimes opens up an inert desktop

Perhaps you should do a repair install, you'll need your Windows XP Pro / Home install disc, reboot your PC, go into the BIOS, change the boot order so that CD Rom drive is booted first, proceed as though you are doing a clean install but when you get to the bit where you can see the partions, select "repair", this reinstalls all the original system files and is likely to work but bee careful as you may inadvertly select "install" due to neglect

If you don't have a clue what I'm saying then theres a hint you should get someone with more savvy to help out or perhaps someone else can pick up the ball and try to explain it better...but I hope this information helps...

    Hi Jeft

Having seen this before, the windows repair wont work as the conflict is between nortons and E-trust, if you can't get into safe mode you will need to reinstall from scratch. Sorry BEANFro Elite I Dont mean to contradict you. We was puting the E-trust on our PC's (Not installed this was up to the customer) and customers would also buy an antivirus and install both of them, not knowing there would be a conflict.

Well, I've never used either eTrust or Norton so I wouldn't have known its just that a repair install usually always solves my non booting woes...

Good to know for future reference though...

You could always try to boot into the recovery console and disable the related av services (the most likely place for the conflict)

Thanks for the reply Phil - sorry for my late respose. Safe mode seemed to work with last known good configuration, the machine now boots up normally as far as 'loading personal settings', and then freezes (though occassionally gets to a partial and inert taskbar) I'll use my laptop to contact eTrust & Norton

    Hi Jeft

If you can get into safe mode, why not try to uninstall both of them (removing just one for some reason does not solve the problem) or run system restore back to the point before you installed nortons, then uninstall E-Trust from add remove programs. Windows will run slow even in safe mode with both installed.

    Phil.
