Please help with new build PC

Hi everyone I have been reading your forum for ages but this is my 1st post... I have just built a new computer and was running ok until today when it just turned itself off while I was playing battlefield 2. I left it for a minute and turned it on again to see that the CPU temp was 72c. Is this right? it seems crazy hot.

    The specs are:

    venice 3500+
    2x 512mb geil value ram
    powercolour x800gt
    asus a8n-e pci express mobo
    Akasa 400w pax power cpu
    Maxtor diamond max 160gb sata

It is my first build and I have a few other probs:

The hdd activity light isn't working even though it is pluged into the mobo.
When playing AOE3 about 3cm of the right hand side is missing, if I adjust the monitor horiz settings it is just black but I can still click on things in this area.

The 3dmark 05 is 3995 is this about right for these specs?

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi sanchezxxx,

What CPU cooler are you using? My CPU hits about 50c max after a good gaming session.

The venice shouldn't be running as hot as that especially with all the new thermal enhancements it's gone through. I hope you've put some thermal goo inbetween the processor and heatsink? Check that the heatsink is seated properly too. Also if you want really good cooling try the Thermalright XP-120, although it will set you back ~£35.

As for the HDD light not working, try turning the connector around as that's usually the problem.

I've been reading some other threads, am I right that this CPU should run @ 1.4volts. In the Asus enhancer thing it says it is running @ 1.52 volts. Is it safe to change this down to 1.4 or should i do it in bios.

I am using stock heatsink and cooler but havn't used any thermal paste, are you meant to when using the stock retail cooling package.

    Cheers

The stock hsf comes with Shinetsu paste pre-applied (grey square on the bottom) & it's as good as any other paste.

Yeah the stock voltage is 1.4v so at the moment you are overvolting it by 0.1v which is a fair amount. Double check in the bios it's set to 1.4

What he ^^ said for the second part, hope you didn't scrape it off!

I think I got that when I first installed CS:S. I THINK it had something to do with the resolution. Try changing that to see if it helps. I'll try digging out the thread I think I remember making for more detail .

EDIT - here's the thread, and it was GTA:SA, not CS:S, and to do with refresh rates, not resolution.
