    Which Memory?

    Hi

Im going to be upgrading to 2gb of memory so I want 2 sticks of 1gb each.

Ive currently come up with 2 options

    1. Geil 3-4-4-8 160 quid
    2. Corsair XMS 2-3-3-6 200quid

Which do you think i should go for and have you got any other suggestions?

Do you think the timings on the corsair are worth 40 quid more?

If you're a purist, and if you're reaching for the sky to try to squeeze every extra gram of performance from your system, then yes. If you're running at stock speeds or overclocking mildly to get an extra 10% then no.

For 200 quid you'd get a much bigger performance boost by buying a faster graphics card.

Memory wise you would see some improvement by buying another 512 meg of memory and whilst 2 gig of RAM is desirable, there aren't that many games that take advantage of it yet....

But I know what it's like.... if you get something lustfully stuck in your head and you're anything like me, then you won't be altogether happy until you've got whatever it is plugged into your system.... so if you've got 200 quid, and you fancy the Corsair memory, and you're looking forward to knowing you've got some kick ass memory in your system, then go and buy it. After all it's only £40.00 more than the other memory, and I've spent more than that many a time on a good night out.

I'm sure this is dejavoo: but I would get the Corsair for the timings and the knowledge you have some good performance RAM

Cant get a faster single slot AGP gpu than what ive got. (ive got a shuttle remember).

Cant put any more memory in (i only have 2 dimm slots).

Hence this is my last system upgrade unless a stupidly faster agp gpu comes out!

Do you think it will matter if I dont get matched pairs cos this will be cheaper (i.e. getting 2 single sticks of the same model and brand of RAM). Im on sk754 and so there is no dual channel mode.

originaly thats why I bought them, I had 2 xms pro sticks and while I could OC them to death the timings were just way too slow! So I took a chance on these and I was amazed!

on average I am benching 400 MBs more then when I had the XMS Pro same speeds just tighter timmings.. I'm now benhing at 6000 MBs So it did help. I can notice the speed on boot and such and my hole PC feals more responsive.

As for are they any good, well they work, there fast as hell, and they have a lifetime warenty. Does the name really matter? But there are some that swear by patriot as well...

However! You cant OC them without relaxing the timings! But I see no need to anyway... They work stable at 2.5v but I give mine 2.7 and am using agressive mode in bios. I hope this helps you decide! If you can save some cash then get them, you wont regret it!

With 1GB sticks you can either choose low latency or high frequency. Very unlikely you can take both. CL2 sticks wouldn't touch anywhere higher than 220 and DDR500 sticks wouldn't touch anything lower than CL2.5.
