Backing Up DVD's

a few qestions..

one are you aloud to backup DVD films... my house mates use my DVD's and don't always take care of them, i was thinking of making copies and leaving them downstairs to keep mine in good shape..

also if i was to back them up what free software is the best to use... i heard you need to use two bits to get a copy?

any advice on both would be great
