USB help...

Hey, I recently got an mp3 player for christmas that uses USB 2.0. I know how to transfer songs and stuff from my PC to the player, but it only seems to transfer them at USB 1.0 speeds. I'm pretty sure my motherboard (MSI K8N N4) has USB 2.0 capabilities, but I can't work out how to do it.

When I plug the player into the computer it says 'A high-speed USB device is plugged into a non-high speed USB port'. Does that mean it is a hardware or a software problem? Do I need to download new USB drivers or what? And if so, where should I get them from?

It means the port you plugged it into is a USB 1 one.
Check the manual which ports are USB 1 & USB 2. Most mobo's have two of each. Also sheck the manual to make sure turning on usb2 isn't a bois or jumper option.

Also, if you don't install the drivers for the onboard USB controller that come with the motherboard, XP will just install standard drivers that run it as a USB1.1 controller. I had the same problem with my ipod nano until I realised that I had to install the drivers that came with my motherboard.

Also if you use Windows XP without any service packs the motherboard USB 2 drivers won't be installed (these are within the service packs)

How can I tell which service packs my Windows XP has? Stupid question, I know, but I've never had any need to find out, and my motherboard driver disk appears to have no USB 2 drivers on it.

Right Hand click on my computer and select properties. Towards the bottom of the dialog box is your system specification and windows version you're using with/without SPs!

Hmm, okay. According to my computer, I don't have any service packs. Which should I download? 1a or 2...?

2 and turn on autoupdates so u dont have to worry about it too much from now on, that will install all essential updates such as security patches. Also if u have front panel USB ports u should try using them, most mobo manufacturers have those as USB2

Service Packs is also freely distirbuted on magazine cover discs last time I checked....

Gah, everytime I go on the Microsoft Update website it forces me to use IE. I do and IE just crashes! Anybody have an idea of why this is going on? Or know of anywhere apart from the Microsoft website where I can get the update? Cheers.

If you've been running a computer on the internet without patches? You should probably put your computer back in its box give it to charity.

Not updating your computer is asking for problems.

You can download a copy of Service Pack 2 stand alone, without using IE.

Do you run any virus scanner?

Try reinstalling IE6SP1, that might solve your IE problems allowing you to get to windowsupdate.com.

Heh, gimme some credit. Yes, I run ZoneAlarm security suite. I've only had this computer set up for about a month at the most, I just haven't got round to it

Didn't help. IE still crashes whenever I begin to update Windows XP. Any other suggestions?

You can download Winodws XP SP2 from Microsoft's Website.

Use the following address

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

It avoids using windows update which only works with IE.
