Registry Corrupted (and a few other problems)

My dad has recently tried to install the game 'Commandos' onto his Compaq PC. When he did this, he got a BSOD, and reset his machine. It then would not boot up, saying that several DLL files were missing (Windows XP Home). Even trying the 'Compaq repair' option gave no joy as that also said files were missing form the system32 folder.

Anyway, he half-installed Windows XP Pro in another directory, but then it crashed I think. Upon restarting, his first version of windows then booted up (I'd imagine it searched for the files it was after and found them in the windows XP Pro directory?). So he can now see the desktop. However, half the icons are just "blue squares", his wallpaper has been reset, and he cannot get half the stuff to work (like his internet connection, some programs, etc). He can open up pictures and windows explorer, so it's not totally buggered, and has some capabilities. I would imagine this is some kind of registry corruption caused by installing Commandos? Is there any easy way to fix it, or would a clean install be best? He doesnt have any previous restore points so cant just wind it back a few weeks (dont know where they've gone. maybe they're lurking in a folder somewhere?).

Secondly, he has a Creative Zen Micro. He has loaded 3 or 4 albums onto it and the hard disk free space is showing as having decreased by about the same amount. However, he cannot see them in any folders on the micro itself. He said the tags were filled in so they should be showing I would think, but they've got lost somewhere. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like you've got corrupted files. You could try reinstalling a service pack as that often overwrites/updates lots of importaant files. Failing that I would suggest a clean install. Not sure about the Zen Micro problem.
