Norton 2005 Internet Security

Ran into a problem where none of my programs could connect to the net properly and when I tried to close them they crashed :\

Uninstalled Norton completely and reinstalled, still the same problem.. also an error message from Norton when I try to turn 'Intrusion Detection' on.

Uninstalled and reinstalled again, same error..

Firewall was working fine till I updated it then it all went bleh >_<

Just about to reinstall again, don't suppose anyone else has had this problem and found a solution?

Tried uninstall / reinstall another 2 times.. same exact thing with the errors and programs crashing and unable to remove via 'end task' thingy in processes.

If I disable NIS completely my programs don't crash..

Maybe I have a virus affecting NIS?

So I've uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times now removing all trace of NIS including registry keys and hidden files in between installments.. still same error.

I cannot turn Intrusion Detection on at all and programs still crash.

In truth i'd probably be inclined to uninstall all of norton and download AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 for virus scans and Zone alarm for your firewall http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...737_000_en.exe they are both free and much less hassle than norton and use less resources

^^ ditto - Norton is now on my "never to be installed" list along with and AOL, BT, NTL, Zone Alarm, DELL(and winamp -may try it again) software.

AVG Free and Kerio firewall (using avast [RIP sniff] atm ) are free and better imho. Also use some anti-spyware too.

I used to use AVG and Zonealarm suite but then I moved over to McAfee and have never had any problems. McAfee Enterpirse is the one I use (it's licensed to the schools I work for ) but all of them are rather good in my opinion.

AVG is or has been pretty slow by comparison to other AV scanners...
See: http://www.overclockers.com/articles1260/ for a comprehensive list of scanners tested... As for firewalls I still use Sygate, an oldie but a goodie...

NIS is the worst Anti Virus.Hacker/Spyware protection you can have

takes alot of CPU and memory usage thus making your PC slugish and slow...

Use AVG Free and ZoneAlarm suggested above
used them both for over 2 years now- top quality Appz

I'd echo everything said above except I'd recommend Avast! instead of AVG.

AntiVir is an amazing anti-virus program - it's never let me down yet.

And just to back up what everyone said, I find Zone Alarm to be very good too.

If you want a decent direct replacement for NIS 2005, you could download a 15-day trial of Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 6 from their website and if you like it, purchase a serial key from the website or (if cheaper) purchase a boxed copy from Amazon.co.uk for &#163;25-&#163;27.

I went to renew NIS 2004 and discovered that it was &#163;35 to do it online or &#163;39 to purchase the upgrade software to bring me up to NIS 2006 or I could purchase NIS 2006 for &#163;25 on Amazon. Then I read some reviews and ditched NIS for ZA suite - so far no complaints and it found lots of Spyware, although it says my PC is now clean but Spybot says that this is not the case.....
