No, it will only get wiped if you format it. A reinstall of Windows is strongly recommended if you switch motherboards, but not 100% necessary in all cases.
Take a look at this thread - seems to suggest you may be able to wangle a replacement chip from Asus and that the chip is in a retainer, rather than soldered on...
yer that phone number is american lol
I have the exact same problem ,only thing is the mobo and PSU are recenty delivered *b-grade* from an overclockers.co.uk, last time I had this problem the 4-pin power connecter near the cpu wasn't pluged in but this isn't the case this time.Originally Posted by project187

I just ordered a replacement bios chip from biosflash.com
What, stop talking twaddle! The bios chip is not soldered to the motherboard, no enthusiast's board has the bios chip soldered to the board.Originally Posted by Splash
If the board is new then rma it and get another if it's not new then I'll sent you a link to where you can a new chip with whatever bios you want pre-flashed onto it.
*edit* - that was one of the places i was going to send you too. There's also badflash.com who I've used a number of times but I think they cost a bit more than biosflash.com
tahnks mate some **** through all my packagin away so no rma for me
This is the reason for not using a program in windows to flash the bios. Always do it on a floppy - less chance of a crash and corruption. Asus have a good flash procedure where you hit F2 on boot up and then just insert the floppy with new, correctly named bios on and bob's your uncle, done.Originally Posted by TiG

I did a bit of googling - according to some review sites on some revisions of the board the BIOS chip is soldered. Note I also stated in my post at 16.46 that another site states that the chip is in a retainer.Originally Posted by jimborae

Well give me link & I'll eat humble pie & apologize, coz as far as I know no revision of any Asus sli board ever had a bios chip soldered on.Originally Posted by Splash
But either way I wasn't trying to start flame war, I think my nicotine patch must have been running out.
@project187 - exactly what make of board is it cos you say you went to the Asus site but you said later on that the board is an AN8 sli which is an Abit board. ??
I googled for AN8-SLI BIOS chip - second page, top hit. I'll admit I was wrong here - it was referring to a Foxconn board, but my point is that we're trying to help project187...
Anyways, humble pie is luvely with custard (chomp chomp)
ffs its an a8n-sli easy typo lol erm looks to me like its in a retaner and i order from omtherboard-flash.com he sold me a new chip and remover tool,
are you all sure this will cure the prob?
what will i have to do on boot for the first time?
once you've replaced the BIOS chip you'll need to set your BIOS up (exactly as with a new motherboard) but that should be it. And if you need to flash your BIOS in future I strongly recommend a boot floppy rather than doing it through Windows, but I think you probably know that now
thanks for all your help
**** windows and winflash i only took the shortcut coz my floppy drive is broke
lol just rang him yer its comes programmed
