    Major spyware/virus problem

Well it seems i accidently installed a bad codec or some **** of the net.

Ive got spybot installed, and when i scan, it find 3 items. It deletes 2, then says 1 needs a restart as it's using memory or somet. I do this, it deletes it ok, when the PC boots it seems fine then the virus come back.

Ive installed AVG free edition, should i scan using that????

It's wierd. A system try icon appears, saying my computer is infected, then some crappy program installs itself, called spyware strike. I open up the net, and i get loads of crap about spyware programs and ****.

Ive re-booted 3 times, used spybot, and it keeps coming back.

Run in safe mode, switch off system restore, remove virus, reboot it should be clear of the virus, as if you dont switch off system restore it will only just replace it again, hope this helps.

..until now. A good AV package is worth it's weight in gold - anyone not running one is asking for trouble.

I'd be tempted to run Windows in safe mode so you can back up all your stuff, and then start from scratch with a clean Windows installation... and this.

Smokey - I'm not trying to annoy you, just get you to realise that running an internet connected PC without antivirus is asking for trouble.

You're using AVG right? What's the name of the actual virus? If you goto start>run>msconfig and check the startup - make sure you remove any dodgy entries from there.

Post back with the name of the infection and I'll see what else I can do.

EDIT - just looked further into it - have you tried the removal tool from http://www.2-spyware.com/goout.php?id=5 ?

EDIT 2 - prolly worth running that in safe mode...

Well ive run spyware doctor, it got rid of loads of crap, then went into safe mode, and deletedwhat i found in the registery from the link.

Spyware stike doesn't seem to start up anymore, and when i open the internet up, it comes up ok, normal home page, before it took of my homepage.

Iam still getting the system tray icon, with the warning though.

Spybot finds codec or somet, well it doesn't anymore, like i said i just get the pop up in systam tray now.

Ill try spyware doctor in safe mode.
