    WMP not working

I recently updated my mob bios and had to activate windows again upon re-boot. Since this I have not been able to play anyfiles in windows media player. I rolled back to wmp 9 and after re-booting wmp wouldnt even open and when i try and re-install wmp 10 I get 'This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site.' Is this going to be a windows re-install? Other than this the new bios update has increased performance, so this is a bit suprising tbh.

Also on start up I get 'new hardware found' but it's unknown so I dont know what files it needs, strange.

Heres the error message I get:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. Hmm my Audigy2ZS is fine though..maybe I'll re-install it.

A system restore now lets me open wmp. I have checked and the sound is configured to go through my audigy 2zs. All sound works fine and mp3 plays fine in media source and games etc, it's just wmp that cant play sound lol. If I could re-install just wmp 10 that would be great but as far as I know it cant be removed. When I tried rolling it beck to wmp 9, with the intention of updating to 10 it stopped wmp from opening all together. Thanks for the help so far Vince.

Try downloading wmp 10 from microsoft and reinstall it as you might have corrupt files for wmp10.

I re-installed wmp10 but that did not work. I have made sure the audigy is set up as the default sound device and enabled it but still wmp will not play any sound files, only video but yep you guessed it, with no sound.

The only thing I can think is the realtek high definition audio drivers need re-installing or updating after the bios update? Is this for the onboard sound? If so I shouldnt really need them surely?

I shouldnt think so, but it is that "new hardware found" bit is puzzling as if you have disabled your onboard sound and enabled your audigy it looks like it's trying to reinstall the onboard sound again.
Just a shot in the dark have you looked at your sound configeration in control panel, sound and audio devices to see how it it set up and also the volume control setting.

Indeed, it all appears as it should. When I first got the pc there was an intallation file on the desktop for realtek high defenition drivers and the realtek high definition drivers appeared in add and remove programs. I'll check tonight if it's still there, if not theres a start; although i dont see why they are needed if all sound should be going through the 2ZS.

    Use Winamp.
All other apps run sound such as power dvd, media source and DivX etc; it's only wmp. Not a great loss I admit but I just don't like broken things on MY pc

I'm also having problems removing norton 06 from my pc, although I've used a tool to do this my pc doesnt seem to acknowlege the fact I have no antivirus soft installed now and an attempt to install AVG free fails. I'm wondering if this is the beggining of the end and I should buy a Samsung spin point that I can back up on to, then re-install XP...

Ok fellas I uninstalled the Realtek audio drivers and vwala! Seems they were conflicting with creative's even if it was set up to only use the default sound device, which in my case was the Audigy 2ZS. I think if I had somhow disabled the Realtek onboard device, it would have also worked; I'll re-install and check it out . Thanks for all your advice guys, much appreciated.
