Been trying to lock down my retail heatsink that came with my opty 146 i can get the thing clamped down but cant get the lever to turn the 90* to lock down.
I have tried i on and of again a few times and its always the same i force the hooks on the heatsink to clamp on the m\b bracket but cant get the lock to rotate and clamp down
btw its on a abit an8 ultra
I was quite amazed at the new cam type lock on these heatsinks. It's a very nice piece of engineering (compared with the old athlon xp screwdriver dance of death).
Make sure the cpu is installed properly with the little arm thingy. I would apply a small amount of wd40 to the cam, remove the thermal pad and apply some arctic silver, ensure that the heatsink is seated properly within the sockets heatsink surround, then turn the lock.
It does take quite a bit of force to get the lock all the way over. I was quite surprised because it does feel like you are applying too much force but once the cam works it locks quite smoothly.

That brings up a question of mine. With the first AMD stock cooler I received (for an A64 3200+), copper base et al. it had a small wedge shaped end on the retention arm, which you could hook under one lug of the retention bracket of the mobo. Should this be done? When removing the heatsink, it always took a huge deal of effort to get the arm to move back, and made a horrible ratcheting sound...still does, every time.
With my X2 4200+, which has come with a basic aluminium based cooler (is this normal btw?) it doesn't have this wedge...in fact there seems to be no way to hook it under the retention bracket, and the amd manual does not show it as hooked under in the final step.
Is it ok to leave it unhooked?

Yes this is normal just the act of turing lock the heatsink in place.
I had the same problem, when I did get it to clamp all the way over my heart jumped as it did take some doing.Quote:
