remove chipset heatsink
hi guys, i posted before about getting a replacement chipset heatsink and fan. i've got one now, but i need to remove my original heatsink from the chipset. any ideas? i've got an asus a8n sli deluxe and i have successfully removed the fan, but now the heatsink is pretty well stuck on there. i have tried pushing the two black plastic pins with springs down whilst twisting and pulling gently to release from the thermal compound but to no avail. anyone else have an idea? i'm slightly worried the chipset might come off with the heatsink if i pull too hard.

Use a hairdryer to heat it all up, should loosen it a bit.

i managed to remove the heatsink from the surface of the chipset but its still held in place with these pins. i've tried pulling, pushing, turning (both directions) to unscrew them but nothing...

Look from the otherside of the motherboard and you'll see that the 2 pins bend inwards on themselves. Bend them in and push them through and volia its off.
Make sure you give the chipset a good clean up and then apply a very thin layer of thermal paste on top of it and put the new heatsink on top.
Good luck.

so i've gotta take the motherboard out....fantastic! i did kinda get the feeling ASUS didnt want me messing around with it but i did expect this. thanks for the information, i'll give it a go.
addy:
thanks for the advice people, but i've just taken the fan off the new heatsink and screwed that onto the original heatsink. not ideal but its keeping it a good 2 degrees cooler than it was and its quiet so i'm happy.
