    Windows Networking/General Trouble

    Hi,

come across a wee issue with PC.

Was defragmenting PC while having a shower and rebooted and suddenly my ethernet/network controller seems to have gone funny, it says its connected, but I can't load any webpages or even get to 192.168.1.1 on my router.

Also, it seems some programs refuse to run when I logon (namly Sygate Personal Firewall, yes its still got an entry in MSconfig to start) and others plain refuse to run at all. I have no idea whats up with it!

    Cheers for any help,
    David

Always a mistake doing anything with a computer while having a shower - unless the PC is waterproof...

What do you get if you run ipconfig?

Tried IPconfig myself, I get an error of some sort - i'll go boot into windows and try it again and make a note of the error/message.

Any ideas about the programs not working?

    Cheers,

How odd - personally I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP as a starting point. Do you have a system restore point you could roll back to?

Personal firewalls can insert themselves into, or take over the TCP/IP stack entirely - so if they get killed they prevent all network connectivity as a safeguard (rather than let everything through).

If Sygate is failing to load its drivers, then this could have broken TCP/IP.

I would try removing that first and see if network connectivity is restored, then reinstall it to re-register and copy the files back.

Removed Sygate, still the same problem.

Getting a 40Gb HD from a friend tonight, gonna install windows on it and see if it works then, if it does i'll just stick with that.

    Thanks for all your help

Try removing the TCP/IP stack and re-installing it.

Another option, have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310747

bung in your XP cd & run SFC /scannow

I have had to do this before on clients pc's, where they could access the internet, but not browse the lan at all.
