Geforce 6800 - dead ?

I have a horrible feeling my 6800 is now nothing more than a fancy paperweight.

Was running Empire at War last night when the whole PC just cut out and turned off. Pressing the power button did nothing. I check the fuse in the kettle lead and it was fine. Took the side panel off the case and disconnected everything. PC would then power on and start to boot. I reconnected everything and as soon as I run a power leads from the psu to the 6800 the PC won't power on anymore (it attempts to turn the gpu fan ever so slightly and that's it).

Could there be a problem with the psu or will I have to face the obvious and replace the graphics card ?

I have managed to boot the PC succesfully with an old TNT2 card and everything appears to be working correctly.

I'm running a Athlon XP3200 @ stock speeds with 1gb of Corsair XMS, 1x old IDE drive, a SATA drive, bog standard DVD drive and a Tagan 420 psu.

Any thoughts ?

Sounds like the Graphics card mate!

I'd say its probably worth trying the psu first, it could be that the gpu is just overloading it following something busting somewhere. Have you tried a few different connectors on the psu?

I've tried a couple of the psu connectors and get the same thing. I also tried just running the graphics card and 1 hard drive - nothing there either. :mad:

The PSU is listed as a Tagan 420watt though - no chance of it getting overloaded with that spec in a million years :)

Just one thing - try removing the graphics card, the re-seating it. It happened to me once (similar thing - just stopped) and that did it for me.

I'll give that another go. I'm going to try it in another machine over the weekend and if that doens't boot/power up I think it'll be definitive.

Fingers crossed. Make sure you remove bits of crap like dust etc, and all the metal connections are clean for a good signal. But don't pour water on your motherboard :)

I know, but if something has gone tits up in it, especially if its one of the dual rail ones and one rail has gone ppop
