Unhappy Help pls. 6600GT install problems

I got a new gfx card recently, XFX GF 6600GT 128mb AGP.

Firstly, I uninstalled current ATI drivers, replaced card with 6600GT (and plugged in molex connector). Then when i go boot up, sometimes the comp freezes on XP splash loading screen or just before it appears (blank screen).

When I do get into windows though (about 1 in every 2 boots) it seems to work fine until a few minutes later in which it completely freezes, regardless of what I'm doing at the time. Also, it instantly freezes whenever I open a 3d app of any kind within those precious few minutes.

Installing the nvidia drivers within the time doesnt seem to change anything, still has freezes. Just means that I only have a few minutes to uninstall it again before I put back in my old card and go searching on the net for help.

My PSU is relatively new, Antec Truepower 2.0 430W, and I've tried turning off fastwrites and switching to agp4x (both do nothing). My current comp specs are:
    AthlonXP 2800+
    Asus a7n8x deluxe mobo
    1GB ram
    Radeon 9600XT
    Antec Truepower 2.0 430W

I really don't know what else to try now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I switched from a nVidia card to ATI I had to reset the CMOS for my mobo..

    I ended up doing a format anyway but;
Try going to the device manager, check that the old card isn't listed.
Also try checking Add/Remove programs and if there is any other old ATI drivers.

hhmm you seem to have taken the right steps when changing gpu's..I would have thought the freezes could be caused by psu but you have a good enough one.

Go to the ATI site and downloaded their own uninstaller program which should hopefully get rid of anything ATI.

Then plug in your new card and install the nvidia ones

    hope this works.

hhmm have you tried your new card in any other systems?? could be the card.

    Red face

Did not you have something special for ATI installed there? Like RadClocker or something?

It is most likely the problem and since you did not cleaned up before, now is probably the time for - well, sorry to say, but - reinstall

There is a slight chance your card might be defective (hey, it just happens to any company...), but there is no way to tell, untill you have clean win and still problems

BTW, please check if your heatsink has proper contact with the GPU core. Crashing after some time might indicate overheating of the core - any maybe during shipping something went FUBAR there, so...

Also, although your PSU has enough power are you using a Molex connector that also powers something else? I'm not techie enough to know if this means 'Rails' or whatever, but I have found that a Molex power connector that provides power to something important already (eg hard drive) might not be good to also share with the graphics card, so try to find another one.
    Hope that helps.
