How to edit a DVD?

I've recently dumped some old Video 8 tapes to DVD and would now like to edit them. Which software do you recommend I use?

Maybe adobe premiere? Im not sure what file types the dvd uses, or if premiere allows you to edit dvd's directly, but maybe its worth looking into? You can get a 30 day trial at http://www.adobe.com/products/tryado...sp#product=101

The DVD was recorded on a Panasonic DMRES20D. I had a look at the disc and it contains a single folder called "VIDEO_TS" containing .BUP, .IFO and .VOB files.

Do you think Premier would be the best cost/performance application for the job?

I found Adobe Premiere to have a steep learning curve though - If you can get Pinnacle/Avid Studio 10 to work on your system :undecided then it's a doddle to use. http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSit...Studio+Family/It does have a reputation for being a bit flaky though.

Ok ive asked a friend and he says that you wont be able to edit directly onto the dvd, as it just doesnt work like that. He says you would need to rip the dvd to your hard drive as an mpg or whatever you choose to rip it as (obviously a file type premiere can open), edit the video in premiere then use a dvd authoring tool to copy it back to the dvd.

It depends what you want to do really....if its just cutting bits out and simple stuff like that...you may be able to use the 30 day trial and get it all done. Full version of Premiere Pro is over 800 quid so if you need it for longer theres Premiere Elements selling for about 40 quid. Ive never used Elements so im not sure of the file types it can open.

So you would need to rip it with whatever program (i dont really know) edit it with either Premiere trial or Premiere Elements....use a prog such as http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html (it was recomended by a friend so i havent a clue what to do with it...you can prolly read about it on the site) to re-encode it, then copy it back to dvd with nero or whatever you use to write dvd's.

Im not 100% sure about all this as ive never tried it but my friend seems to think that should work...seems like alot of effort really but there you go!

As he is the DVD author, the files wont be encrypted so no need to "rip" them. Simply coping them to the HD will suffice :)
