USB2.0 PCI Card - Problems with eHDD

    Hey Guys,
My current desktop uses a rather archaic Asus P4B motherboard, running a P4 2.0ghz and a rather stingy 2 DIMM array creating 512mb 166mhz SD-RAM. It also has 2 USB1.1 ports, which, needless to say, provides rather lacklustre levels of performance when using my Maxtor OneTouchII hard drive. I therefore purchased a 5 port USB2.0 PCI extension card.

I initially presumed 'corruption' problems on the drive (whereby whole folders (and the files within them) would have odd hex-like names or nothing at all) was a sign of it dying. However, when I run the drive through my inbuilt USB1.1 ports, nothing seems the matter, except a small corruption in the 'recycle bin' of the drive (whereby odd files with squares in their name are apparently unable to be deleted, though aren't even visable in the drive).

I therefore presume this USB2.0 PCI expansion card is the root of my problems. I have tried reseating it, cleaned it etc, but nothing. I have also reinstalled Windows several times without change.

If anyone knows what could be happening, and more to the point, how to go about fixing it, I would be most grateful. It takes over 3 hours to install some software I have stored; apparently USB1.1 is far slower than it even should be on XP

    Thanks Guys.

    Xaneden.

on any pentium board i have tried a pci usb2 card i have always had problems with any using the the ALi chip which sadly is most common.

but every pci card using the NEC chip works great. can be found at Scan for £6

    hope that helps

    Thanks for the reply 5cupa.

I have found one such card on Scan, which has firewire too. However, it's Belkin, and I heard that this combined unit may be ALi.

Do you know any way to find out who makes what?
