IIRC you could just set up a Ad-hoc network and use shared folders to get your files.

Do you have a wireless router? If you do then its very simple and you can just put both computers in the same workgroup and share the folders on each computer (right click drive/folder and click on properties -> sharing). You'll be able to browse the folders on the other computer. This should be fine for normal file sharing although copying large movies wirelessly is quite slow from my personal experience.

The other option is to connect both computers directly using a crossover cable which plugs in the NIC port. This is basically a modified network cable, you can do it yourself or pop into a local PC shop and get them to do it for you for £5.

Superglue will connect them fairly well...

In the interests of a constructive post though...will this be a one-off large file transfer, or will this be a regular synchronisation?

That's not a stupid thought at all Rob, and is in fact, what edavies87 suggested.

You can setup an ad-hoc wireless network, using the built in Windows Wireless configuration utilities, and transfer it that way, without a router in sight

If you have an ethernet/network card, then you could just get a crossover cable (you can buy them or do it yourself). You won't need a hub or anything then either.

If either laptop has a Ggiabit ethernet port then the ethernet cable need not be a crossover one as all GiE ports are auto switching.

    Same! I didn't know either!

I know there is an extra port on an old hub I have which you can use if you have a crossover lead to turn it into a standard one.

Should be able to do it over wi-fi fairly easily. Might need to turn off any firewalls you have running on both machines though.

If I'm doing it with a cable (and I'd assume this would all work for wireless), I tend to set the first machine's IP to 192.168.0.1, and the other to the same thing, but .2 at the end instead. then do a ping from a command prompt (Start>Run>type 'cmd', then 'ping 192.186.0.2' from the first machine, and the same thing again but with .1 from the second machine). In my experience that tends to just make sure that they're both connected and talking to each other.

Also make sure they're in the same Workgroup (usually MSHOME or WORKGROUP, makes no difference though). The other machine should then be visible from My Network Places under "Show Workgroup computers".

May or may not work first time, so you might have to restart and do the 'ping' thing again. I've also noticed that Windows tends to get confused if you're trying to network another computer to a machine that is already connected to a network (even if it's through another method).

    Hope that helps somehow.

Not saying that this isn't true of some NiCs but it's certainly not the case with all I have used in the past.
