CPU usageover 50% (dual core) - can't find out why

    Hey

My computer is getting a little sluggish so I checked my CPU usage in Task Manager. It's constantly over 50% but according to Task Manager the system idle is at around 95%. There's nothing in my processes list that is using anything over 5% (at the moment).

How can I find out what the problem is?

    Cheers

    Tim

    Hi,

Have you done a virus / adware scan recently? Could be some nasty little program has been hidden from the task manager and is the cause of the CPU usage. Maybe.

I had a problem like that a while back. Turned out to be a trojan, lurking in the background.

Do a full scan with your anti-virus app. Also try using HouseCall (it's an online virus scanner, very effective).

    Hey

I've done my spyware/virus scans and nothing has shown up. I have noticed that it leapsright up when watching movie files. It doesn't matter if they're 2 hours or 2 minutes long. The picture stutters and then stops but the audio carries on.

I have't updated drivers in the past few days so I don't understand

Possibly a problem with a codec you have installed? Try uninstalling a few new programs you have and looking into MSCONFIG for new startup menu items and services.
