    Pressing Keyboard Spacebar Restarts Computer

I've been ignoring this but now it bugs me - when I shut down the computer it goes through the correct shut down sequence and I even hear a distinctive click of what sounds like something disconnecting in the computer and everything appears to have shut down and powered down correctly.

What I'm finding is that by pressing the spacebar key on the keyboard (and this only happens with this key) the computer fully restarts.

I've run virus checks and nothing shows along with spyware.

The only change to the computer is that I have installed a second hard disk as a back up following the failure of the original hard disk, other than that I have not touched any of the hardware.

Hope someone might be able to help me narrow down the cause of this so that I can sort it out.

It does sound like a very wierd problem, do you have a spare keyboard to test, and is the keyboard usb or ps/2 ?

Try a new keyboard 1st as the key could be broke, some keyboards have a shutdown function and it could be linked to that

If your still having issues do a system restore then a format if your still having problems

After that, it could be the motherboard

i think there may be an option in the BIOS for some motherboards that allows you to turn the computer on in ways other than by pressing the power button. Check to see that this option is disabled for devices like a keyboard. I had this option on an old Asus socket A motherboard so that i could turn the PC on using a USB device, anyway its worth a look.

    Hope this helps

^^ kasavien has it I think

Look in your bios - almost every bios these days has a 'wake on keyboard' or 'wake on USB' setting somewhere, that lets you start up your PC by pressing a certain key/key combo on your keyboard. Can't think of any other explanation unless you are hibernating instead of shutting down...which I think you would notice.

Thanks all especially those that pointed me to the BIOS as you were right, on reading the information book for my motherboard it confirmed that the BIOS can be set for power-up on pressing the keyboard - I've now disabled it.
