    TFT screen not black

I recently bought a 17" TFT from Scan and when compared with my CRT it really is poor. The screen is bright even with the brightness down to 0.
In a darkended room the areas that are normally black are a grey colour and not even dark grey. Is this normal? I understand light bleeds through but not sure what other TFTs are like in a darkened environment. In a lit room it's less noticable, but running the quake 4 demo on both monitors there is definitely less atmosphere on the TFT.
The monitor doesn't have a gamma setting only on the ATI catalyst which seems to have no effect.

    Help is much appreciated.

Not unheard of, particularly if its a budget model or one that uses a TN+film panel.

What make / model is it?

Yup, quite common with TFT's. Hence many people still say CRT's are better, especially for anything dark.

Well the one I got is a Lucoms from Scan (Daewoo 'premium' brand - yeah right!) I think it's a TN panel. Luckily it was not the full price of £150 but on a today only offer at £104 - I still feel robbed though

No $***! I've grown used to my 17" Diamond Pro and thought I'd upgrade to a larger screen with DVI capabilities. What a waste of money really. Worse buy this year!

DVI makes no difference at all (using a Dell cable - are these any good?)

I ran some games on both the TFT and my CRT and the CRT really kicks butt. The TFT seems smokey and colours are a bit washed out (I think due to too much brightness)

I wonder if I could return this for a full refund - honestly wasn't what I was expecting.

The budget TFTs almost always have poor color output. They would have marked the price higher if the quality of the product is good. You get what you paid for.

Turning down the gamma and brightness from the driver should have (I did that too because my 2001FPs are too bright)

Yeah true. I did expect a budget TFT to have poorer colour output but it isn't too bad on this screen. It's mainly the blacks.

After some adjustments the areas that should be black are still grey (black with light beeding through really). Are there any guides around to help adjust a TFT or gamma/contrast in particular?

I have a Medion MD6155 which is now about 2 years old so it's not a new model by any means but the picture is just great for what I use it for and I must point out the blacks on mine are just that so I would suggest that your monitor is in need of dire adjustment or is faulty so have a word with Scan for their opinion as I am sure they will put you right

My monitor is preety good, looks nice, im thinking of getting another to go next to it ive also found that if you adjust your driver settings you can generally get a better black
