Computer sounds like a hoover

Hi,

My computer seems unusually loud. I am running a akasa pax power 400w psu and this seems to be making the most noise. In the Asus monitor for my mobo it says it is running at 5500 rpm; is this normal and is there any way to quieten the thing?

The chipset fan on the Aus mobo also seems very loud.

Any help in solving this would be iuch appreciates.

Are you sure that it's the PSU that's running at 5500rpm?
Sometimes the sensor's aren't picked up properly, and it would be more likely to be your chipset fan that's running at that speed. You can place your finger on the centre of the fan briefly to check if it's this that's making the noise.

If you've got semi-decent airflow in your case, then you can look for a passive chipset cooling solution like the Zalman NB47J...there are numerous other options too.

To check if it's the PSU, I would put a straw or non-metallic object in between the fan blades of the PSU (while it's off), and then turn the PC on, to see if this lessens the noise significantly. (Only do this briefly, so that the PSU doesn't overheat).
If it is the PSU, then you can either swap out the fans for something quieter (although this will void any warranty, and can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing) - or buy a different PSU.

I've always used Tagan or Antec NeoHE PSUs, but almost everyone on here will recommend Seasonic PSUs as well.

Just a thought...what Asus mobo is it?

The original A8N-SLI and Deluxe variants had the most annoying chipset fan ever designed....Asus offer the newer fan model as a replacement which lessens the noise somewhat, although not enough for my noise standards .

Thanks for the help, I have tested all the fans and it appears to be the CPU fan, it is a stock fan on a AMD 3500 Venice. Should this be this loud or is this worth changing for something better. I am using a wave master case and Asus A8n-e mobo, have checked the other fans are they are making nowhere near as much noise. The Asus monitor says it is spinning at 5800 rpm and the CPU is 43C for normal use, is this right? It was nowhere near this hot during the winter.
