Plextor DVDRW burning at 1x only

I recently added a Plextor PX-755A/T3UK to my system, however no matter what i do it records DVDs at 1x.

I have the jumper set to cable select. (could this be causing the problem)
I am usinng 8X rated media.

I am at a loss to why this might be happening, so any ideas are greatly appriciated.

Also, is the drive set to DMA mode rather than PIO mode - that can make ahuge difference. Check the IDE controller in the device manager & change it if needs be.
