Asus P5W DH Deluxe... Not Booting from DVD-RW

    Hey Guys,
Just trying to get my new PC up and running (listed under 'System'). My very recent NEC DVD-RW drive is detected as the IDE master, and I have put it as number 2, only behind the Floppy drive. However, it just will not boot from it.

After the fairly prolonged AMI BIOS start-up, it goes to a black screen with the flashing cursor, and I hear the DVD-ROM drive rev up. This last for only a little while, and then it stops. A few moments later, the PC restarts.

Can anybody suggest what I have done wrong, and why this is happening? I am trying to install XP, and am used to the 'Click any key to continue' message, or for it to automatically start when the hard drive has no bootable OS.

Thanks for any help you can give.

what IDE port are you using? (i can't remeber if there is one by the floppy and one at the bottom of the board or just 1 IDE port in total)

it also won't ask you to press any key as you have no OS on the HDD, it should simply boot. Make sure its set to master and its being picked up by the BIOS (it should come up after any RAID devices are detected etc)

I'm using the Intel chipset IDE port, located next to the floppy drive. Nothing is plugged into the JMicron IDE port, which detects that during the boot. The NEC drive is set up as master IDE, and I have tried booting it in first position, as well as behind the floppy drive.

    Just tried, no luck.

Also, it says in the manual that you can't use ATAPI devices with the jMicron controller? Do we have the same motherboard?

Could be a faulty DVD drive.

I had a similar NEC DVD re-writer that stopped being able to read (or write) CDs. Scan gave me an RMA and replaced it, but now the replacement appears to be having a problem with dual layer DVDs. Must contact scan about that.

Have you checked with another DVD drive?

i have the p5b and after updating the bios, it wouldnt detect the dvd drive, for some reason it has disabled the ide controller in the bios, i just enabled it and it was ok after that.

check the obvious, ide cable, power cable ok?, cables definatley not loose at euther end? does the drive work in another pc?..does another drive work in the new pc?

try resetting the cmos, take the battery out for a while, could be something as simple as that.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I just tried another drive: No luck. I have also tried both drives in both IDE ports. I'll give that IDE controller idea a go Clunk: Would resetting all the BIOS options to default be equivalent to resetting the CMOS?

Just booted it up again; it seems the drives have switched in the drive details bit, so that the SATA hard drive (IDE Master 3) has become Master 1, and vice versa with the NEC drive. Unfortunately, it still does not boot from the drive.

What exactly do you mean when you say "blue side to the board", Jay Oasis? If you are referring to the IDE cable, I put it in so that the missing pin aligned etc.

Reckon' it'd be worthwhile updating the BIOS?

well the blur port on the IDE cable goes to the board.... if they are both the same colour than there should be two IDE headers close to eachother and one further away, this is the one that plugs into the board. If you get it the wrong way it can cause problems.

do you have a Core 2 Duo CPU in there?

    Ah good, that's what I've done. Also, I have a E6600.

With regards to the bootable disc, I have tried the original OEM SP2 disc, and a custom version I have slipstreamed drivers into. Neither work. I have also tried the Windows 98 CD, with the same loadless response.

I'm just about to update the BIOS, I'll tell you all how that goes.
