power cut - now the pc won't load windows

I get a BSOD as the windows loading screen appears (well about a second or two after).

WOuld using the original XP disc to perform a repair (well, a master boot record or 'fixboot' be a likely fix for this one? I don't want to 'perform that action' if there's a likelihood I'll make the drive inaccessible though!

    Any advice would be good

FIXBOOT and FIXMBR should never make your OS unbootable....

But I doubt either will fix your problem =/

What exactly was the PC doing when the power failed?

Most likely cause is a hard disc crash.
You can try running chkdsk from the repair console.

thanks for the advice and information.

i can't have another go on this one for a few days (so no bsod code at hand) but i'm thinking the disk was in use at the time.

will post back and advise when i can get back to it.

    cheers

    EDIT:

yep, got this sorted as suggested. thanks
